Windows 7 is the latest release from Microsoft and Microsoft Outlook 2002, 2003, 2007 and Outlook 2010 all are compatible with Windows 7 operating system. Sometimes upon starting Outlook, you might encounter a message that an error has been detected and you need to run Inbox Repair Tool. Inbox repair tool can be started with Scanpst.exe, which repairs the corrupted pst files. The location of pst file depends on the version of Microsoft Outlook you are using and which version of Windows you have installed, it can be either 32-bit Windows or 64-bit Windows.
The default location of pst files in Windows 7
Drive: \Documents and Settings\user\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Some of the reasons because of which your pst files
may get corrupted in Windows 7 are:
Up gradation: While upgrading
your operating system say from Windows XP/Vista to
Windows 7 your pst file might get corrupted due to
registry key corruption.
Importing location: When pst
file is imported from older version of Outlook to
newer, it must be imported to default
location of pst file in newer version of Outlook.
Exporting the pst file and then importing it in wrong
location makes the pst file inaccessible for Outlook.
PST file size (2GB): If you are
working with Outlook 2002 or an older version, try
to limit the size of pst file within 2GB otherwise
if you try to read the email from your inbox you
will get an error message which says:
"An unknown error has occurred. 0X80040600”.
PST files on server: PST files
are designed to be stored on the computers and in
case you store them on network drives or server,
network environment might not be able to support
the access to your pst files and your pst file is
open to frequent corruption.
Since pst files are prone to get damaged in
the situations as discussed above you must follow
few precautions which will help your pst file from
getting corrupted. Few important ones are discussed
below:
Proper Backup: Make a proper backup
of all your pst files before upgrading your Microsoft
Outlook.
Eg: When you upgrade your Outlook 2007 to 2010,
your pst file might get corrupted. Due to corruption,
you are unable to open the PST files and you receive
error message as mentioned below:
“Outlook.pst is not a personal folder file.” That
is why proper backup is important before upgrading.
Default location: While migrating
to newer version of Outlook, be sure to import the
pst files into the proper default location of Outlook.
Because of the delivery location corruption, most
of the user report Outlook crashes with an error
while upgrading:
“Borland database engine not installed. Can't load Corel address book service provider”.
In this situation install Borland database, reinstall
MS Outlook, and create new profile. If the problem
still exists then pst file is corrupted. You can
repair it using Inbox repair tool for Outlook 2007.
Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) is default software,
which comes with MS Outlook. To run Scanpst.exe,
double click on the Scanpst.exe. It will open the inbox
repair tool. Then, type the path of the PST file and
click on the browse button. Click on start. However,
when corruption becomes severe, then scanpst is unable
to repair the pst file. Scanpst only repairs the header
of the pst file and it deletes everything that it does
not understand. Therefore, if the header of pst file
is corrupted then scanpst can repair but in case content
of pst file is corrupted then scanpst will destroy
everything. Therefore, to repair corrupted pst file
effectively you can go with Remo Repair software.
Remo Repair Outlook (PST) repairs Microsoft Outlook
pst file. The recovered data is stored in a new pst
file which provides safety to the source PST file.
During the repair process, the software also recovers
deleted email messages, contacts, notes, tasks, calendar
items etc. along with all existing elements of the
PST file. This software works on complex algorithm
to diagnose and repair the complete pst file with all
the settings and contents.
